Título
Benefits of oncology patient journey monitoring by a nurse navigator: an integrative review
Introdução
Patient navigation aims to accompany the journey of oncology patients from prevention, investigation, diagnosis, treatment, and survival to the end of life. This is carried out by the nurse navigator, who works to remove barriers throughout the entire care process, whether emotional, financial, social, or communicative, serving as a facilitator of the journey. Understanding the benefits that this program can provide to patients leads to its implementation in healthcare services.
Objetivo
To describe the benefits of being accompanied by a Nurse Navigator during the oncology journey.
Métodos
An integrative review was conducted using the databases LILACS, BDENF, and MEDLINE. Data collection included publications from 2018 to 2023, using descriptors such as “patient navigation,” “oncology,” “nursing,” and “oncology nursing.” The searches resulted in 49 articles, and after selection based on pre-established criteria, 10 were included in this study.
Resultados
The scientific literature described several benefits, among which the most frequently cited were: optimization of care with individualization and facilitation of the process in an agile manner (n=6), assistance in overcoming biopsychosocial aspects during the health and illness process (n=3), increased patient satisfaction (n=3), promotion of more effective communication (n=2), better understanding/education in health during follow-up (n=2), and reduction of costs to the patient and the institution (n=1).
Conclusões
It is evident that being accompanied by a Nurse Navigator during the oncology journey provides numerous benefits to the patient and also represents excellent cost-effectiveness for the institution. Thus, it is a growing program that deserves recognition and proper specialization.
