Título

Quality of life of patients with colorectal cancer treated at the Amazonas State Oncology Control Center Foundation

Introdução

The National Cancer Institute estimates that there will be 45,630 new cases of colorectal cancer between 2023 and 2025, with 21,970 cases among men and 23,660 cases among women. Colorectal cancer is the third most common type of cancer in Brazil. The increase in cases is due to population growth and aging, related risk factors, and improvements in reporting and screening.

Objetivo

To assess the quality of life of participants diagnosed with colorectal cancer treated at the Fundação Centro de Oncologia do Estado do Amazonas

Métodos

The study is part of a larger project entitled “Analysis of the Molecular and Clinical Spectrum of Colorectal Cancer: from epidemiology and quality of life to genetics and omics analysis”, submitted to the Ethics and Research Committee in September and approved on December 20, 2021, CAAE: 52343821.2.0000.0004. This is a prospective longitudinal study, with a quantitative approach, which characterized the clinical, epidemiological profile, and quality of life of patients with a confirmed diagnosis of colorectal cancer treated at the Fundação Centro de Controle de Oncologia do Estado do Amazonas. They were recruited through spontaneous demand from the institution's outpatient service. Upon agreeing to the terms of the study, they were instructed to sign the TCLE and through a standard questionnaire, sociodemographic and epidemiological information on risk factors and health determinants was collected. The instrument chosen to measure the quality of life of patients for this study was developed by the European O

Resultados

A total of 150 participants were approached, 23 of whom died within the period defined for conducting the research. There were no withdrawals or refusals to complete the questionnaires. Therefore, we have 127 participants eligible for the quality of life assessment. The data presented show a significant predominance of females, totaling 67 in the sample, and 60 males. Regarding the age range of the patients, 76 are under 60 years old and 51 are over 60 years old. Regarding the nationality of the patients, there is a predominance of individuals from the interior of the state of Amazonas, totaling 47, while 40 patients are from the capital of Amazonas and the remainder are patients from other states. The participants rated their general health and quality of life at the beginning, where 1 is poor and 7 is excellent, 34 responded that their general health was “regular”, and 32 responded that their quality of life was “excellent”

Conclusões

The sample consisted of 150 participants diagnosed with colorectal cancer, treated between 2023 and 2024, identified through spontaneous demand at the institution's outpatient clinic. Two structured question forms were applied. To assess quality of life, the EORTC QLQ-C30 + QLQ-CR29 questionnaires were used. The results obtained showed that 23 participants died within the period defined for conducting the research; of these 150 participants, 10 were excluded because their definitive diagnosis did not correspond to the inclusion criteria of the research.
