SKIN CANCER EXCISION CAMPAIGNS IN MATO GROSSO: AN ANALYSIS OF THE EPIDEMIOLOGICAL PROFILE

Introdução

Skin cancer is the most common malignant neoplasm in Brazil, categorized into melanoma and non-melanoma types. Non-melanoma neoplasms include squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and basal cell carcinoma (BCC). They are the most common type of cancer in Brazil, accounting for about 30% of annual cancer cases, with more than 185.000 diagnoses in the country in 2020. BCC is the most prevalent (75%), followed by SCC (20%). Melanoma, although representing only 3% of cases, has the worst prognosis.

Objetivo

To analyze the epidemiological profile of patients with dermatological lesions suggestive of malignancy who were included in the skin cancer excision campaign at the Hospital de Câncer de Mato Grosso (HCan) in Cuiabá, Mato Grosso.

Métodos

A simple descriptive study with an analysis of the epidemiological profile of patients who participated in the skin cancer excision campaigns at the HCan in Cuiabá, Mato Grosso, from November 2022 to June 2024. The collected data was subsequently tabulated using Epi Info.

Resultados

Skin cancer prevention campaigns are promoted by HCan, a philanthropic entity, which allocates one hundred consultations per municipality for active case finding, evaluation, and triage of patients for the excision of skin lesions with carcinogenic potential and their follow-up. Mato Grosso is divided into 142 municipalities, of which 69 were covered in 14 campaigns conducted between November 2022 and June 2024, with Juína, Juara, and Alta Floresta being the cities with the highest number of patients, respectively. In total, 1.234 patients were referred for lesion excision surgery, 54% female and 46% male, with 847 (68.6%) attending and undergoing the procedure. Among the lesions addressed, 59 (6.9%) were pre-neoplastic, and 545 (64.3%) were neoplastic (carcinomas and melanoma). Among the neoplastic lesions, BCC was the most prominent, accounting for 465 cases (85.3%), followed by SCC with 71 cases (13.0%) and melanoma with 9 cases (1.7%).

Conclusões

The skin cancer excision campaigns play a crucial role in the early identification and treatment of malignant and pre-malignant lesions in the population of Mato Grosso. Of the 1,234 patients referred for surgery, 68.6% were treated, highlighting the effectiveness of these campaigns in addressing the high prevalence of neoplasms. The data underscore the ongoing need for prevention and screening programs to reduce the incidence of skin cancer and improve patient prognosis in the region.
