OVERVIEW OF ONCOLOGICAL HOSPITALIZATIONS FOR RADICAL PNEUMONECTOMIES IN BRAZIL OVER 11 YEARS
Introdução
Radical pneumonectomy is an extensive and complex surgical procedure that involves the total removal of one lung. This type of surgery is indicated for the treatment of advanced-stage malignant lung tumors when other therapeutic approaches, such as partial resection, are not viable or effective. Analyzing the epidemiological profile of these surgeries is crucial to understanding the distribution and access to specialized oncological treatments in Brazil.
Objetivo
To describe the epidemiological profile of hospitalizations for radical pneumonectomies in oncology from 2013 to 2023 in Brazil.
Métodos
This is a quantitative, descriptive, and retrospective epidemiological study on hospitalizations for radical pneumonectomy in oncology, conducted through data extraction from the Brazilian Unified Health System's Informatics Department (DATASUS), covering the period from 2013 to 2023. The variables included mortality, race/ethnicity, sex, age group, and hospitalizations, stratified by Brazilian region.
Resultados
A total of 1,089 radical pneumonectomies were performed on oncological patients in Brazil between 2013 and 2023. This number remained stable, with an average of 99 procedures per year, with reductions only in 2021 and 2022, where 72 surgeries were reported each year. The highest incidence was in the Southeast and South Regions, with 469 and 334 procedures, respectively. The Northeast Region accounted for 194 pneumonectomies, the Central-West for 54, and the North for only 38. The total expenditure for the country over the 11 years analyzed was approximately 9 million reais, proportional to the number of surgeries performed. The average cost per procedure in Brazil was 8,301.49 reais, with the highest in the Southeast (8,458.95 reais) and the lowest in the North (7,626.53 reais). The average hospital stay was 7.7 days in Brazil, with the Central-West and North Regions having the longest stays, 9.4 and 9.2 days respectively, and the Southeast the shortest, at 5.9 days.
Conclusões
The findings of this study highlight a significant concentration of radical pneumonectomy procedures in the Southeast and South Regions of Brazil, suggesting a potential disparity in the distribution of resources and access to specialized oncological treatments. The analysis also reveals stability in the number of procedures, except for a reduction in 2021 and 2022, and an increase in associated costs, which may be linked to the COVID-19 pandemic.
