Population analysis of early gastric adenocarcinoma at AC Camargo Cancer Center

Introdução

Cancer is one of the main public health problems worldwide, being lone of the biggest causes of death and, consequently, one of the main barriers to increasing life expectancy in the world. Currently, gastric adenocarcinoma represents the fifth most common neoplasm in the world, behind breast, prostate, lung and colon lesions, and the third cause of death from cancer, below lung tumors and hepatocellular carcinoma. Stomach adenocarcinoma mostly affects men aged around 60-70 years. About 65% of patients are over 50 years old. (INCA, 2022).

Objetivo

To analyze demographic characteristics and treatment profile of patients with gastric cancer in clinical stage 1.

Métodos

Study design: Extraction of results from a database with gastric cancer records.
Study population: People diagnosed with stage 1 gastric adenocarcinoma who have their data registered at the RHC of Hospital A. C. Camargo Cancer Center.
Inclusion criteria: People diagnosed with early stage 1 gastric adenocarcinoma, people aged 18 years or older and of both genders.
Exclusion criteria: Incomplete hospital records. Patients with stage II, III and IV gastric cancer will be excluded. As well as people with more than one primary tumor.

Resultados

In the AC Camargo Cancer Center hospital registry, 665 confirmed cases of stage I gastric adenocarcinoma were recorded from 2000 to 2023, with microscopic confirmation. Of these, 343 were female (52%) and 322 were male (48%). Furthermore, 611 are people residing in São Paulo (92%). Furthermore, the most prevalent age groups are: 60-64 years old with 99 patients (15%), 65-69 years old with 88 patients (13%) and 50-54 years old with 76 patients (11%). Regarding the treatment performed, 473 patients underwent surgery (71%), 5 patients underwent exclusive radiotherapy (0.75%), 10 patients underwent exclusive chemotherapy (1.5%), 53 patients underwent surgery plus chemotherapy (8%) and 7 patients underwent radiotherapy plus chemotherapy (1.05%). In the case of the service category, 490 people were served through the agreement (74%), 71 people through the SUS (11%), 8 people through private individuals (1.2%), and 96 people without information (14%).

Conclusões

The association of early diagnosis with adequate treatment at the right time is the combination that can bring the best curative result and with greater cost and effectiveness for the patient. With the data collected and analyzed in this study, it will be possible to understand the characteristics of this population of patients treated at AC Camargo, and can shed light and help in planning public policies, optimizing public resources for early-stage diagnosis and offering the best oncological and health outcomes. quality of life for patients.
