Título
Systematic Review: Importance of Physical Exercise After Cancer
Introdução
Cancer and its treatment can cause significant adverse effects on the physical and mental health of cancer patients, including fatigue, loss of muscle strength, and changes in quality of life. Physical exercise has been recognized as a positive intervention for cancer survivors, contributing to recovery and improved quality of life. Regular physical activity can help mitigate the side effects of treatment and promote increased overall health.
Objetivo
To evaluate the importance of physical exercise in the rehabilitation and quality of life of cancer survivors, as well as its effects on physical, mental, and emotional health.
Métodos
A systematic review was carried out in databases such as PubMed, Scopus and Cochrane Library, using keywords such as "physical exercise", "cancer", "survivors" and "quality of life". Studies published between 2010 and 2023 were selected, including clinical trials, meta-analyses, and reviews. The inclusion criteria were: (1) participants diagnosed with cancer; (2) interventions involving physical exercise; (3) evaluation of the effects on quality of life and physical health. The methodological quality of the studies was assessed using the PRISMA tool.
Resultados
The analysis included 25 studies that demonstrated that regular exercise, both aerobic and resistance, is associated with significant improvements in the quality of life of cancer survivors. Participants who exercised reported reduced fatigue, increased muscle strength, improved mood, and reduced anxiety, contributing to the resumption of daily activities, improved self-esteem, and improved mood. The positive effects were seen in several types of cancer, including breast, prostate, and colon. In addition, exercise was associated with greater adherence to treatment, a better overall prognosis, and a lower risk of recurrence of the disease.
Conclusões
Physical exercise is crucial for cancer survivors, improving physical and mental health. Exercise programs should be encouraged in oncological rehabilitation to increase quality of life. In addition, healthcare professionals should integrate exercise into post-treatment care, recommending 150 minutes per week of moderate activity or 75 minutes of high-intensity activity.
